In this hands-on course students learn about the science and engineering behind jewelry making. They investigate aspects of:

  • solid state physics;
  • metallurgy;
  • material sciences; and
  • engineering and design.

Students explore questions such as:

  • What is a crystal?
  • What are different types of crystalline structures?
  • What is a metal? An alloy?

·       What properties do jewelry making materials have on a macroscopic level?

·       How do these properties translate at the microscopic (atomic) level?

How can we understand these properties to engineer a piece of jewelry with a desired aesthetic outcome?

This is a wonderful course for students who want to know the science and engineering why’s behind a piece of jewelry they design.
