Select topics in Molecular Biology

This course explores various topics in molecular biology, including trends and new developments. It is a lab-focused course led by molecular biologists from the Innovation Institute teaching team as well as guest specialists. The course incorporates a review of fundamentals, current understanding and promising research in biomedical life sciences/biotechnology and future areas of inquiry. Select topics to be explored include (but are not limited to):

  • gene expression

  • gene editing

  • cloning

  • gene-based therapeutics

  • protein science

Students perform lab experiments regularly using PCR and Gel Electrophoresis. They gain exposure and experience in lab practices.

By the end of this course students will have had an opportunity to explore the daily life of a bench scientist in molecular biology and understand the questions and aspirations driving research in the field to improve human health and wellbeing.
