Chemistry of Human Body Systems and BIOMED ENGINEERING
The Chemistry of Human Body Systems is an exciting introduction to human physiology and anatomy for young people, particularly for those who like to conduct experiments and simulations.
The course explores the chemical and biological functions and processes of human body systems and how they interrelate to maintain human health. Body systems investigated from this perspective include the:
- digestive system
- respiratory system
- circulatory system
- musculoskeletal system
- nervous system
- renal system
Students explore questions such as:
- When we inhale air, how does the body recognize the parts of air, i.e., oxygen, that we need?
- How can my stomach have HCL inside of it and not burn a hole through me?
- Does my body really have electrical signals? How does it make them and why?
- What is homeostasis? How does it work?
Students engage in chemistry labs to investigate what happens within many organ systems. They develop demonstrations and engage in creative model building to help explore both structure of the human body.
Like all courses at The Innovation Institute, this one includes one engineering design challenge per trimester either directly or tangentially related to the course content. Importantly. students engage in both scientific and engineering thinking practices to become familiar with their similarities and differences.
The Innovation Institute's team engages area research institutions and industries to help our students understand how and why real people are investigating the science behind and developing innovative solutions to the topics covered in this course's curriculum.
Learning entry points include the use of storytelling, fiction and non-fiction literature and art.
